A New Beginning: Celebrating a Transplant Journey After 5 Years on Home Dialysis
From the Perspective of CT Kidney and Hypertension Specialists

We are thrilled to share an inspiring milestone in one of our patient’s lives—a successful kidney transplant after five years on home peritoneal dialysis. This story, recently featured on Channel 5- Fox News (see video below), highlights not just a medical triumph, but the deep human connections and coordinated care that make transplant success possible.

For half a decade, our patient managed kidney failure with home dialysis—a treatment that requires daily commitment, discipline, and strength. At Connecticut   Kidney and Hypertension Specialists, together we recognized the goal of kidney transplant and a life without dialysis for David. It has been an incredible reward to work with patients like Dave through every step of that journey, focusing on personalized care, preserving quality of life, and preparing for the ultimate goal: a kidney transplant.

That goal became a reality thanks to the incredible generosity of a living donor. We extend our deepest gratitude to all organ donors—living and deceased—who give the gift of life. Their selfless decision provides patients with not just a functioning kidney, but a renewed sense of freedom, health, and hope.

Why Transplant Is the Gold Standard

A successful kidney transplant offers many benefits compared to dialysis:

  • Improved quality of life and energy levels
  • Fewer dietary restrictions
  • Enhanced long-term survival
  • Freedom from the daily routine of dialysis

For many, it means returning to work, traveling more easily, and enjoying more time with family.

Post-Transplant and Donor Care: Our Ongoing Commitment

Our role doesn’t end with the transplant surgery. Post-transplant patients require lifelong care to ensure their new kidney continues to function well. Our team of nephrologists and hypertension specialists closely monitor:

  • Immunosuppressive medication levels
  • Kidney function through labs and imaging
  • Blood pressure, which is crucial for kidney health
  • Infection risks and early signs of rejection

Equally important is supporting living donors. Those who donate a kidney can lead full, healthy lives with just one kidney—but their well-being deserves continued attention. We provide follow-up care to monitor kidney function, blood pressure, and overall health. With proper care, living kidney donors can remain just as active and healthy as before donation.

A Team Focused on Long-Term Kidney Health

At CT Kidney and Hypertension Specialists- we work with Hartford, Yale and surrounding transplant centers to optimize patients and kidney transplantation.   Our collaborative care model brings together specialists in chronic kidney disease, transplant nephrology, and hypertension to give our patients and donors the best outcomes possible.

We are honored to be part of our patient’s journey from home peritoneal dialysis to transplant success, and believe their story will inspire others waiting for a second chance at life.  Dave has been a great supporter to people seeking information about kidney donation. We are grateful for his courage to share his story with our patients and to continue to provide hope to others.
